The Gita

Before we begin our study of Sri Aurobindo’s approach to the Gita it is perhaps necessary to make a few preliminary observations about the importance and the special role that the Gita has played in the spiritual, religious and the social traditions of the Indian people. As far as we are concerned, the Gita has played a significant part in the lives of both Mother and Sri Aurobindo. As you all know, the Gita was Sri Aurobindo’s companion in Alipore Jail and even before. He had an intimate communion with the Lord of the Gita which he describes in his Uttarapara speech, and he specifically mentions that he followed the yoga of the Gita when he was in Alipore Jail. His fondness for the Gita continued even after he came here and his perspective and vision broadened and heightened. It had become a part of his being as it were. I found that the largest number of references in his writings to scriptures is from the Gita. Next comes the Upanishads and then the Veda.
