Sri Aurobindo and His Yoga
Sri Aurobindo and His Yoga
M.P. Pandit‘s Sri Aurobindo and His Yoga is a comprehensive introduction to the life, philosophy and practice of Sri Aurobindo‘s integral yoga. The first part surveys Sri Aurobindo’s life and work — his philosophy, his yoga, his writings on the Veda, the Upanishads, the Gita and the Tantra, and his vision of Indian culture and social development. The second part turns to the practice of the yoga itself: the foundations of sadhana, the role of the Mother, the stages of the inner development, and the conditions of transformation. Written by one of Sri Aurobindo’s closest disciples, this is a classic introduction to the integral yoga.

Chapter I — Sri Aurobindo
REACTING to the importunities of biographers, Sri Aurobindo once remarked that none could write on his life for it was not there on the surface for man to see. And that in spite of the spectacular roles played by him in the different spheres of life. For, apart from the large number of sonnets, lyrics, poetical plays, poems from the surrealist to the mystic, he has given us the longest epic in English verse, Savitri, a legend and a symbol. Was it not he who gave a clear political ideal to the resurgent India, channelized the nationalist aspirations into an effective revolutionary movement and set the country on the road to complete freedom? Has he not developed the ideal of nationalism into the greater ideal of Human Unity and established its inevitability in the mind of man through his prophetic Writings? Has he not presented the grand philosophy of Life Divine which unites in its sweep both the ends of existence, the Spirit and Matter, which have hitherto defied reconciliation and kept man and God apart?
